This cozy fall retreat brought a gathering of like-hearted souls to Southern Vermont, where the air was crisp, the trees were ablaze with fiery oranges and golds, and creativity flowed as freely as the cider. Together we explored the magic of gouache painting, inspired by autumnal subjects like scattered leaves, colorful quilts and knobby gourds.

Seasoned artists and the brush-curious alike worked through fundamentals and explored expressing themselves through color and shape. Just as much, the week was about slowing down, being present and soaking up the beauty all around. We sipped warm drinks, shared stories and created together in the rustic barn, filled with warmth (literally, thanks to the new heat pump) and connection.

After a warm welcome, the week began with getting to know the paint. Next came a day of slowing down with quilts, followed by painting gourds and cozy objects.

On the final day, everyone shared their work and said farewell, with the barn studio full of autumn color. It was a cozy October week at The Smiley to remember.
