Artists Retreats at The Smiley Manse
An amazing new experience from Jennifer Nelson Artists
Springfield, VT. July 1, 2023: Looking to get away from it all? How about getting away TO it all?
It’s all happening at The Smiley Manse, a sprawling historical site nestled in one of the greenest areas of picturesque Ver- mont. Artists come from all corners of the world to enjoy the quiet serenity of this pastoral setting to do what they do best: create art.
The inaugural event took place over four days in June of 2023 with 15 professional artists converging in a converted barn to paint and enjoy each other’s company.
“It was like summer camp for artists,” said co-host Jennifer Nelson. “Complete with hugs and tearful goodbyes when it was over.”
During the retreat artists enjoyed goods and services from many Vermont makers. Delectable meals were catered by the Barefoot Gourmet. Artists were serenaded by 5th generation Vermont fiddler, Patrick Ross, and specially made ceramic dishes made by Vermont artist, Maxine Hugon. All surrounded by the historical lush gardens at the property. “The artists even picked fresh peony, daisies and honeysuckle vine for inspiration,” Jennifer said.
Originally built in 1811, as a parsonage (manse) for the Reverend Robinson Smiley. And lovingly renovated and expanded in the 1920s, The Smiley Manse has a rich history, having been owned by both a Vermont Governor and Senator at various times. When Jennifer and her partner, Nate Ells, saw the six-bedroom mansion in 2022 they fell in love at first sight, know- ing immediately that the Manse would be a place for artists. “We knew we would make an art space. The light is breathtak- ing, and the barn has a soul!”
The first retreat was led by Dylan Mierzwinski, who is commercially represented by Jennifer Nelson Artists, Inc. The attending artists were effusive in their praise for the event. “Connecting in person with other artists after years of the pandemic, taking time away for just myself with no one to care for and nothing to do other than just be present and make art; being in Vermont, one of my very favorite places, and getting to take in all the beautiful details of the barn, the Smiley Manse property and everything else left me with a deep sense of satisfaction.” – Ashley, a retreat artist.
In a world where digital media and artificial intelligence are intruding on the uniquely human enterprise of creating art- work, this was a breath of fresh air – literally and figuratively. The artists worked with physical media, primarily acrylic gouache, using their own hands to express themselves. “It was a real treat for all of us. ‘Magical’ was the word I heard the most. Many of the artists had an almost spiritual experience.”
June 2023 was just the first of many art retreats, the next one led by artist and community builder, Salli Swindell, is sched- uled for September 28 – 1 October 2023. Planning for future retreats are underway such as Dimensional Collage with Lori Siebert, 25 Faces with Lauren Lowen and a return retreat with Dylan Mierzwinski. Interested artists are encouraged to apply at the website, www.the-smiley-manse.com. Send email to retreats@ the-smiley-manse.com. Space is limited.
Jennifer had some advice for artists planning to attend the next retreat. “Leave your nicest clothes at home. But bring your open mind, your loving heart, and your working hands.”
