Print & Stitch with Julie Crabtree
DATES: July 17-20, 2025
FEE: $1,190
This workshop will explore a variety of printing techniques on both paper and fabric, creating dynamic base designs ready for embellishment with stitching. Students will experiment with textured surfaces, overprinting, as well as using rubber stamps and stencils to enhance their designs.
To add depth and interest, layers of sheers and netting will be applied over the printed surfaces, offering unique effects for both machine and hand stitching. Participants will then have the opportunity to cut back layers, incorporate beads, and add found objects, all contributing to the creation of a textural stitchery piece that can be transformed into a wall hanging.
This workshop is ideal for students who wish to explore freestyle machine embroidery in combination with hand stitching, or those who prefer to focus solely on hand stitching techniques.

About Julie Crabtree
Julie Crabtree, born in Nottinghamshire, England, holds City and Guilds of London qualifications in Fashion, Textiles, and Embroidery from Mansfield College of Arts, where she later taught. Her journey led her from England to Canada and eventually the United States, where she embraced various life experiences and skills, all of which now inform her work as a textile artist, teacher, and painter.
While primarily known as a textile artist, Julie's passion for painting has grown significantly in recent years. "Painting has always been a part of my textile creations. I keep a sketchbook journal as a working reference for my ongoing projects."
Julie’s work primarily explores landscapes, focusing on the interplay of color, texture, and the elements of earth, trees, foliage, sea, and rocks. These natural forms, shaped by time and extreme forces, offer endless inspiration for her creations. Her work ranges from realism to more recent explorations of textural abstraction. The erosion of nature over centuries inspires Julie’s desire to capture a sense of time and place, merging the traditions of needle, thread, and paint to express the essence of these landscapes.
Julie often travels with her sketchbook and camera, drawing inspiration from her surroundings, whether locally or in the woods and hills of her home in Vermont. She spends countless hours refining ideas, layering materials, and experimenting with techniques such as hand and machine stitching, shears, netting, painted and dyed backgrounds, distressed fabrics, hand-spun and dyed yarns, felting, and soluble stabilizers to create the desired effects.
For Julie, the journey of exploration as an artist is ongoing, and she feels privileged to have the ability to see and create during her time on Earth.
“I had such a good time, the openness and sharing, permission to play was so special. I’ve never done anything like this and seldom/never allow myself something that felt like a huge indulgence going into it. But after leaving I know it was not only so good for me but really needed. Meeting so many varied artists was also fun and refreshing.”

The Smiley Manse Barn
Nestled up behind the main property is the barn. This turn of the last century post-and-beam construction with a slate roof that rises to a massive walled cupola, the barn is noted as one of the finest carriage barns in the region. Learn more about the history of The Smiley here.
Inside, you’ll find large flat work tables, each a place to explore and express your individual creativity, yet the atmosphere encourages connection and dialogue. Whether it’s the sound of a paintbrush sweeping across the page or folks discussing technique over coffee, the barn serves as a meeting ground for artists of all levels to create and build lasting relationships, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
